I went and had breakfast this morning. Since I felt much better, I needed to get out and eat real food. The last few days I have eaten very little because of being sick and sleeping my days away. Best thing for a cold by the way. At least in my opinion.
Now I am always proud of my "sensitive palate". (Cue eye roll here). And so when I got my coffee this morning for breakfast and I couldn't smell it I was a bit confused. It really wasn't as tasty as usual. I know that we tend to take in food with our eyes first. Smell, is generally a close second. This directly correlates with taste. Or at least how we think something should taste. And my sense of smell being off messed up the taste of the coffee.
People have been tested when their favorite foods or drinks have had the colors altered or changed. And the result has been that they tend to taste what they see instead of what's actually there. Such as a white wine appearing to be red. You get my meaning I hope.
And so it's not like I didn't enjoy my coffee, my waffle, and my eggs. But to be honest I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do. Because of my nose being stopped up with the remnants of a cold. It seemed to throw everything off.
I guess my whole point here is, even though I love food and I love to eat. It is considerably less enjoyable when you cannot see, smell, touch and savor your food. Nothing new to science there. Just surprised me at how much of a difference it made to me personally.
Now what I really wanted to write about today was Easter. Which I will write about in my next blog. Because it was rather amusing, and very interesting. at least from my perspective.
But for now I have to figure out a way to enjoy what I'm eating even though I can't quite smell it yet. Maybe, this is a way to eat a little bit less. Hey, one can hope. Although I'm not sure that would work for me. Because I do love to eat as I said many other times.
And so for now and until next time.
Eat well.
