So this is off my usual topic but it does involve food so I thought it was worthy of being shared.
I
went out to dinner with a friend of mine recently. This was before I
had pulled the reins in on the eating so I was pretty game to try
anything.
He
took me to China town to a real Chinese place. It was an interesting
experience to say the least. And we were the only people there that were
not Asian.
He
ordered hot tea so the person said 2 hot teas. Huh? I guess I don't get
a say? Well, it was hot green tea with the little tea leaves all
floating around in it. My friend said there was probably a tree branch
in the pot. I did not want to know. I added sweetener to try to cut
through the bitterness. It made it drinkable.
This
nice little woman kept coming over and grabbing my empty packets and
pouring more tea. I felt like she disapproved of my using a sweetener.
So I tried to just not make eye contact and do it discreetly. It made me
feel oddly judged, like she was my grandma.
Then
they brought the soup. I got egg drop soup, my friend got the hot and
sour. It was good. Didn't taste any different from any other place. Made
me wonder. Do they all use the same recipe or is this some kind of
pre-made mix? Just add water and heat. I may never know. It was good so
not complaining, just curious.
Then
I wanted a shrimp/crab ball that sounded good for an appetizer. The
little lady brought it out and used scissors to cut them in half. Well
then.
That
was unexpected. I asked for sweet and sour sauce and she was already
bringing some over. Must have read my mind. They were okay. A little
more bland than I expected but I enjoyed the mushy texture. I just cant
figure out why I couldn't cut my own food up. Another mystery I may
never solve.
On
to the main dish. My friend tried to order one particular beef dish but
the man told him no, and recommended a different dish. Peppered beef I
think. I did taste it. It was spicier than I like my food but the beef
was very tender. It came with steamed rice. The portion was huge. He
liked it a lot. That's all that matters.
I
got the shrimp and scallop fried rice. It was really why I wanted the
sweet and sour sauce. I do enjoy my sweet. It was so good. I really
enjoyed the dish. Was well made. Tasted and smelled good. Again a huge
portion. I actually made myself not overdo it because I wanted dessert. I
do have my priorities in life. So I ate just enough and got the rest to
go.
We
both had leftovers. So the nice people came and put the food in to go
boxes for us. Because we can't be trusted to do that for ourselves
either I guess. The little lady put it in a plastic bag for us. I guess
she assumed we were going home together. If I would have told her
otherwise I think she would have given me another disappointed look so I
just let it go.
Overall
a good experience. I recommend doing date nights even if it's just with
a friend. It's good to experience new foods, new cultures and to get
out if you can.
Then
we went to an Ice cream place for dessert. I wont go int all the
details. We know what ice cream is all about. Yes, more sweets. It was
good too. I was happy with the entire evening out.
It didn't occur to me to take a picture so you will have to use your imagination this time.
No revelations here. Just living life and enjoying food. It is what I do. So until next time.
Eat well.
